Timeline: 1928-1938
This turbulent period began with a big bull stockmarket, which was soon replaced by the sale of 3¢ apples on streetcorners....A time of Woody Guthrie songs and Fred and Ginger...of the Dust Bowl, Prohibition and Amelia Earhart....of the vast growth of grocery chains and the appearance of the first supermarkets, making the new emerging brands - now advertised on the radio - available to almost every American.

Rose M. Knox, President of the C.B. Knox Gelatine Company, served on the GMA Board of Directors beginning in 1924 and continuing through most of the decade - one of the first women to serve on a large national board.

GMA Leads in Recovery
GMA and its new President Paul Willis and General Counsel Charles Wesley Dunn lead the charge on the Federal Pure Food and Drug Act....At FDR's request, GMA formed a committee of the diverse elements of the industry to create a "master code" establishing fair competition in the industry under the National Recovery Act (NRA). This super code set out how the entire grocery industry should operate and constituted a new era in industry relations as well as a model for many provisions for the Robinson-Patman Act of 1936.

April 1938: GMA hired its first staff press writer with a salary of under $300 annually. All office staff took salary cuts in the dark days of the Great Depression....GMA's 1930 operating budget: $60,000....Average weekly pay envelope in 1932 contained $17. Bread cost 7cents a loaf and beans 10 cents a can.
