Timeline: 1958-1968
A time of unrest and revolution....The Berlin Wall went up and the Cuban missile crisis heated up....A time of Camelot and the Beatles, the New Frontier and the Great Society. Americans traded picket fences for picket lines as the Vietnam War grew more unpopular and civil rights more urgent....A time of "Breakfast at Tiffany's, " mini skirts, flower children. ...John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth.
Change of Guard at GMA
Paul Willis, GMA President 1933-66, stepped down to be replaced by George Koch, who moved the association from New York City, where it had been headquartered since the beginning, to Washington, D.C. Mr. Koch was immediately hit by a bevy of bills in Congress coming from the rapidly growing consumer movement.
GMA Food Ransoms Bay of Pigs Prisoners
In 1962 GMA President Paul Willis got a phone call from Attorney General Robert Kennedy noting that the President needed $12 million in food to "ransom" the Bay of Pigs soldiers held in appalling conditions in Cuban jails. Mr. Willis and GMA's Executive Committee quickly put together a campaign to raise the ransom. Gerber gave $920,000 worth of baby food, H.J. Heinz gave $1 million and General Mills $500,000 in food. Finally, the shipment, made up of many donations, was ready, and on Dec. 29, 1962, President and Mrs. Kennedy welcomed the newly released prisoners in ceremonies at the Orange Bowl.
GMA Continues Global Stance
GMA President Willis led exhibitions to international cities to promote food/grocery exports....President Kennedy appointed Mr. Willis to the Executive Committee of Food for Peace. He and GMA lent technical assistance in food production/ logistics to underdeveloped countries, especially in Latin America.
First U.S. automated factory, 1964, Sara Lee plant in Deerfield, IL....1961 minimum wage raised to $1.15 an hour. Can of tuna was 39 cents.
