Timeline: 1968-1978
A beleaguered LBJ Presidency with Vietnam casualties and mounting protests soon gave way to President Nixon.The period produced the first man to walk on the moon, the first peacetime gas shortage, the first lost war and the first President to resign. A time of soaring inflation and recession, hippies, bicentennial celebrations, Billie Jean King, health foods, sideburns, polyester, Henry Kissinger, Gloria Steinem and "All in the Family. "

GMA Faces Social/Economic Upheaval
GMA and its new President Koch rolled with the punches when President Nixon announced price/wage controls and a devaluation of the dollar in 1971. ...GMA opposed FDA's proposal to regulate "cents off" coupon promotions....GMA pioneered numerous food safety measures and gave press briefings to the nation's food editors on inflation and food prices....GMA began sponsoring the Watchdogs of the Treasury Awards to Members of Congress who exercise fiscal responsibility.

Industry Innovation That Changed Selling Worldwide
GMA and its Chairman Burt Gookin (H.J. Heinz) played a pivotal role in the development of one of the industry's most important innovations - the Universal Product Code (U.P.C.) - in the early 1970s. The U.P.C. has since revolutionized selling in every hamlet around the globe.

GMA Fights Hunger
Supporting legislation to expand the federal food stamp program, GMA began nutritional education programs for food stamp users. The organization pushed school feeding and WIC programs, and in the late 1960s became a moving force in growing national foodbanks, like America's Second Harvest.
