Timeline: 1988-Present
The Cold War is over. The U.S. stands preeminent. President Bush led the nation in the Persian Gulf War.... President Clinton took office. In 1998, the economy was booming, and America becoming digital. A time of cloning, Seinfeld, family values and consumer values, time-starved shoppers and home meal replacement.

Top Changes at GMA
Manly Molpus took the helm at GMA as its third full-time President and CEO in March 1990, when George Koch retired after 23 years.

The dominant industry issue is the pan-industry initiative toward more efficiencies and better value for the shopper. Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) was born at a GMA Executive Conference workshop in June 1962 and has changed the face of the industry ever since.

GMA's vigorous environmental initiative led to a report in December 1996 that, among other good news, grocery packaging discards dropped more than 14 percent from 1980 to 1993, despite a population growth of 13%. Americans are eating out almost as much as they are eating at home. GMA is blazing new trails in industry foodservice issues.

GMA follows its tradition of leading the way on the key issues of the 1990s...food safety, nutrition, biotech foods, ECR, international trade, tax reform, solution selling, RFID, other logistics efficiencies and more.

Looking Backward While Moving Ahead
GMA welcomes the awesome responsibility of leading one of the most vital segments of the U.S. economy at the begining of the new millennium. Because we believe . . .

. . . the best is yet to come.
