Efficient and Effective Product Recall Management


Glenn Black, Ph.D.:

Glenn Black is Director of Science Operations (Food Protection) at GMA.  His current responsibilities include oversight of research and member services related to food processing and microbiological safety. He also provides oversight and leadership for GMA’s Better Process Control Schools and thermal processing of foods workshops and instruction. Glenn has a strong background in thermal process engineering and microbiology with extensive experience at a senior level with industry, government and academia. He is recognized as a food process authority and a leader in food processing science.

Prior to coming to GMA, Glenn served in various positions within the food and beverage industry, including research engineer, research & development, at the Slim Fast Foods Company, a division of Unilever. As a research engineer, Glenn oversaw the pilot plant operations and monitored thermal processes and filings.

Glenn has published numerous articles in recognized peer-reviewed scientific journals addressing microbial modeling and inactivation. He is a member of the International Association for Food Protection, Institute of Food Technologist, and the Institute for Thermal Process Specialists.

He received a B.S. and M.S. in agricultural engineering from Clemson University and a Ph.D. in food science and technology from the University of Tennessee.


George E. Dunaif, Ph.D., DABT, CFS:

George Dunaif is the Vice President of Food Safety & Technical Services at (Grocery Manufacturers Association) GMA. George is currently responsible for leading the Regulatory Compliance & Crisis Management , Process Engineering, Microbiology, Chemistry and the Packaging Integrity and Forensic Analysis staff and laboratories at the GMA. He is also a board certified toxicologist (Diplomate-American Board of Toxicology), Certified Food Scientist and has successfully completed the International HACCP Alliance training for HACCP Managers. George has served on the advisory board for the New Jersey State Poison Control Center.

Prior to joining GMA in 2011, George served as the Vice President for Global Food Safety at the Campbell Soup Company, including concurrent service for ten years as a member of the Campbell Corporate Crisis Management Team (CCMT) with global responsibility, the last three of those years, as the vice-chair of the CCMT. While at Campbell, George was responsible for leading worldwide programs in Process Engineering & Safety, Microbial Safety, Toxicology and the Corporate Analytical Laboratories (Chemistry, Microbiology, Nutrition Analysis, Microwave and Forensic Analysis). 

George has served as an editor on several publications and has also published several peer-reviewed scientific articles on the topics of food safety, allergen & pesticide management, endocrine disruption and regulatory compliance related to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).  George is a member of the Society of Toxicology, Institute of Food Technologist, American College of Toxicology and American Board of Toxicology.  He also served as a founding member of the board to the Food Allergy Resource and Research Program (FARRP) and the Industry Advisory Board to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN).

George received his B.S. degree in Nutrition & Foods from the SUNY College in Buffalo, M.S. in Human Nutrition from Iowa State University and Ph.D. in Toxicology, with minors in Pathology and Pharmacology, from Cornell University.


Amy Fanale: 

Amy Fanale is the Director, Product Management at GS1 US, a not-for-profit standards organization. She is responsible for both the Rapid Recall Exchange® and Data Driver® solutions. She has a diverse background encompassing marketing, supply chain, technology, management consulting, strategic planning, business process design, technology, and software implementation and training.

Prior to product management, Amy directed the marketing efforts at GS1 US and 1SYNC (formerly Transora and UCCnet) to deliver the company’s vision to the marketplace and customer community.

While at 1SYNC (formerly Transora), Amy also held a leadership role in the Collaborative Planning Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) service where she worked with manufacturers and their direct materials suppliers to gain supply chain efficiencies through collaborative business practices.

Prior to Transora, Amy was Practice Manager at Benchmarking Partners, where she managed client engagements in various industries and start-up’s with the alignment of their business to their corporate strategy.

Before joining Benchmarking Partners, Amy was a Manager of Consulting Processes and Standards at Manugistics (now JDA).  She was responsible for the development of the methodology and deliverables used by the professional services team, enabling the team to produce consistent and value-added consulting services.  In addition, Amy led numerous, successful large-scale software implementations for companies in a variety of industries, both domestically and internationally, ensuring supply chain best practices.

She came to Manugistics from DSC Logistics, where her most recent role at DSC was Manager of Marketing Planning.  She was led all marketing activities, including strategic planning and communications.  While at DSC, she also held a variety of roles in sales, warehouse management, and transportation.

Amy holds a B.S.B.A. in the fields of both marketing and transportation & logistics from The Ohio State University.


Elise Fennig:

Elise Fennig is Vice President of Industry Affairs for the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA). She directs and manages GMA’s industry affairs initiatives and projects within the supply chain management and technology, sales and sales promotion and industry performance practice areas.  She has primary responsibility for fostering growth and value chain efficiency through greater collaboration among retailers, manufacturers and suppliers.  Elise also has primary responsibility for driving manufacturer adoption of the Rapid Recall Exchange® recall notification tool among GMA members and nonmembers.

Prior to joining GMA, Elise served as vice president of member services at the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI).  In this role, Elise directed the member recruitment and retention programs for the Institute, and oversaw AFFI’s affinity programs and sponsorship platforms.  Having joined AFFI in August 2006, Elise served the Institute in a variety of capacities, including managing the Institute’s public affairs and communications activities.  Elise also served as the executive director of many of AFFI’s managed associations, including the Frozen Food Foundation, the National Yogurt Association (NYA) and the Frozen Potato Products Institute (FPPI).  

Before joining AFFI, Elise worked as a public affairs specialist at the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) former Florida Integrated Science Center (FISC) in Gainesville, Florida.  At FISC, she worked to promote the work of scientists whose research contributed to the understanding of non-native plant and animal species and the preservation of threatened and endangered species in and around Florida.  

Elise earned a bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs and Spanish from the University of Virginia and a master’s of mass communication, specializing in public relations, from the University of Florida. She is a 2010 graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organization Management for association executives.


Jim Flannery:

Jim Flannery is Senior Executive Vice President, Operations and Industry Collaboration at the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA). Mr. Flannery leads the association’s Industry Affairs practice and has primary responsibility for developing and implementing collaborative relationships, initiatives and programs with retailers and their trade associations across all retail channels. In addition, Jim helps GMA identify and implement innovative services and programs that enhance the value of GMA membership.

Jim most recently served as Managing Director, Customer Development, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Global Operations. He spent 36 years at P&G, holding various positions in customer business development and market strategy and planning.

Jim’s responsibilities around the world for P&G began in the U.S. soap and detergent and food and beverage businesses from 1977-1994, where he had sales and management roles in the coffee, orange juice, shelf stable drink, peanut butter and snacks businesses. He served as Market Strategy and Planning Manager for P&G’s food and beverage business before departing to Australia in 1994. From 1994-1998 he directed customer business development and customer marketing in Australia and Asia.

From 1998 to 2003, Jim served as Director, Worldwide Customer Marketing. He has been in his current role since 2003. He has direct responsibility for all of P&G’s industry-wide commercial collaboration efforts and the internal capabilities required to deliver them.

Jim has also held volunteer leadership positions at GMA, the Food Marketing Institute and Efficient Consumer Response-Asia.  He was also instrumental in the creation of the Consumer Goods Forum.

A native of New York, Jim holds a B.A. degree in Human Resources Management from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey.


Daniel Triot:

Daniel Triot is founder and president of DHT Consulting LLC, a strategic advising firm that envisions break-through solutions.  Daniel is a senior executive with 30+ years of multi-functional and global experience with Arc International, The Gillette Company and Procter & Gamble.  His areas of expertise include transatlantic business development, strategic planning, global multi-functional process improvements, merger and acquisition integration and reverse logistics.

At Procter & Gamble, Daniel was, most recently, the corporate customer logistics programs owner.  He led the multi GBU direct store delivery program to ensure display compliance and improve in-stock merchandising.  He also managed the corporate unsaleables program and product recalls for which he redesigned the process and streamlined customer notifications through Rapid Recall Exchange.  He played a pivotal industry role on the GMA/FMI Joint Industry Unsaleables Leadership Team and GS1 Global Recall Standards working group.

During his 24 years tenure at P&G/Gillette, Daniel Triot held positions of increased responsibilities in business development, market strategy and planning, as well as operations management for major brands in personal health, grooming, batteries, household needs and stationery products.

Prior to joining Gillette, Daniel was national sales manager at Arc International where he successfully opened entry of its glass and housewares special markets division into the US.

Daniel holds an advance degree in Business Administration from Ecole Superieure de Commerce in France.


Mark Vare: 

Mark Vare joined Inmar as a recall consultant in 2011. He is a certified regulatory affairs professional (RAC) and a licensed pharmacist in the state of Indiana. When engaging with client organizations, Mark draws upon 10 years of business ownership and professional consulting experience and 20 years of success in the healthcare industry, including regulatory affairs, recall operations, supply chain logistics, field sales, community and hospital pharmacy, quality and marketing.

Mark has consulted for some of the largest U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as smaller virtual firms to conduct recall readiness assessments, mock event exercises, specialized marketing programs and compliance reviews. In 1997 Mark joined NNC Group, LLC where he held positions as director of regulatory affairs and director of market development.

During his tenure, Mark assisted pharmaceutical and device manufacturers in the development of recall plans and implementation of hundreds of recall events. Additionally, he developed and managed educational outreach programs which included various published works and numerous speaking engagements.

Mark most recently has applied his cGXP regulatory and consulting expertise to assist pharmaceutical, medical device, food and consumer packaged goods manufacturers in the development, implementation and maintenance of compliant quality systems and CAPA programs across the entire product lifecycle.
