The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) represents the most comprehensive reform of our nation's food safety laws and regulations in more than seventy years. Friday, December 20th's release of a proposed rule on Focused Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration is yet another step forward toward implementation of this landmark law.
FSMA ensures that prevention is the cornerstone of our nation's food safety strategy and this proposed rule embodies that same principle. This proposed rule would require domestic and foreign facilities to assess vulnerable processes in their operations as a method of prevention for intentional acts on the food supply intended to cause public harm. The proposed rule would also require larger food manufacturers to have a written food defense plan addressing significant vulnerabilities within its operations. Once in place, this proposed rule would establish measures that a food facility would be required to implement to protect against the intentional adulteration of food.
Leading the process for preparing detailed comments, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) will host its fourth FSMA Update Webinar - Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration on January 30th, 1:30 - 3:30 PM (EST).
Part I: Thursday January 30, 2014, 1:30 - 3:30pm (EST)
Hear from legal counsel experts Joe Levitt, Partner at Hogan Lovells US LLP and former Director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) and Elizabeth Fawell, Associate at Hogan Lovells US LLP, who will specifically address what is included in the proposed rule including key effective dates and the implementation timeline for compliance.
Hogan Lovells will also identify any potential high level issues or barriers that will need to be considered during the public comment period. They will identify and address what food manufacturers can begin doing today for effective implementation.
Part II: Friday January 31, 2014, 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm (EST)
On Friday, January 31st join Ryan Newkirk, Ph.D., MPH, Policy Analyst, Food Defense and Emergency Coordination Staff, CFSAN, FDA for an overview of the major provisions of the proposed rule, the most significant changes that will be felt by the industry and an extended question and answer session!
