Grocery Manufacturers Association Urges Congress to Balance Climate and Food Security Needs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) today issued the following statement from GMA President and CEO Pamela G. Bailey regarding the release of climate legislation by Senator Boxer and Senator Kerry:

“We look forward to working with Senator Boxer and Senator Kerry to craft legislation which addresses the challenges posed by climate change and which meets the world’s growing food security needs. In particular, we look forward to working with Congress to ensure that climate legislation provides food, beverage, and consumer product goods manufacturers with a fair share of emissions allowances and to ensure that offset provisions do not inadvertently cause farmers to fallow or reforest millions of acres of cultivated land at home and abroad. I am confident Congress can craft climate legislation that will not pit our climate security needs against our food security needs.”

GMA is working with other food and farm trade associations to assess the impacts of climate legislation on food production costs and will release a study in October.
