Grocery Manufacturers Association statement by Vice President of Federal Affairs Scott Faber after testifying at the House Agriculture Appropriations hearing on the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act:
Faced with one of the most serious public health challenges before our nation - childhood obesity - we are encouraged that Congress is heightening its focus on children’s health and nutrition. Finding practical, effective tools to address this complex problem is an urgent priority and the Child Nutrition Act is a critical part of that effort. In particular, the Grocery Manufacturers Association fully supports giving USDA the power to establish national, science-based standards for all foods sold to students during the school day.
Everyone has a role to play in this fight: the public sector, private industry and parents. We pledge to do our part by continually changing the way we develop and market our products. In recent years, we have changed the recipes of more than 10,000 of our products to reduce calories, fats, sugars and sodium without sacrificing the taste, convenience and affordability that consumers demand.
We look forward to continuing our work with Congress and the Obama Administration to help reduce obesity – especially childhood obesity.
