GMA Government Affairs Committees and Working Groups

Biological Food Safety Working Group
The Biological Food Safety address microbiological food safety issues such as Listeria, irradiation, the President’s Food Safety Council, inspection force issues and more.
Biotech Working Group
The Biotech Working Group develops solutions to food biotechnology issues in the food industry, including Codex and labeling for food and ingredients derived through biotechnology. They also participate in GMA’s biotech task force and a Dialogue Group that interacts with the ag biotech industry.
Consumer Products Policy Committee
This committee focuses on a variety of legislative and regulatory issues affecting consumer products companies at the international, federal and state levels. Comprised of consumer product company government affairs professionals, the CPPC reports to the GAC.
Don't Tax Food Coalition
Led by GMA, this coalition of food and beverage companies and allied national trade associations promotes fair and equitable tax treatment of food and opposes selective food taxes in the states. The Coalition also opposes restrictions on the sale and marketing of foods and beverages.
Federal Affairs Committee
GMA member company representatives, typically the heads of Washington, DC offices, who meet on a quarterly basis to review in detail federal legislative and political issues. The FAC makes recommendations for action to the Government Affairs Council.
Food Allergy WorkingGroup
The subgroup works with a broad industry alliance to address allergy issues on labeling, communications and education of the general population.
Food Industry Codex Coalition
The Food Industry Codex Coalition is a group involving more than 30 national trade associations and companies, including GMA. It focuses on the US government’s role in international food policy and standards, particularly Codex Alimentarius.
Food Issues Forum
Ad hoc group of allied trade association representatives interested in food issues.
Food Safety/Independent Food Agency Task Force
GMA members who evaluated and made recommendations to the NAS regarding the feasibility of a single food agency. Task Force also further explored the issue of food safety in general. Task Force also includes trade association reps (see mailing list).
Functional Foods Working Group
The Functional Foods Working Group evaluates the current regulatory structure and environment, responding to issues and working with government agencies for their resolution.
Government Affairs Council
The GAC consists of senior level GMA member company representatives who formulate GMA public policies. Committees that report recommendations to the GAC are the Federal, State, and Consumer Product Policy Committees. The GAC is one of three Councils that report to the Board of Directors.
International Affairs Group
Formed in 1997, comprised of senior-level member company reps with international interest and expertise. Meet when necessary to provide guidance on GMA's involvement with and policies on international issues.
International Council of Grocery Manufacturers Association (ICGMA)
ICGMA is a non-governmental organization (NGO) formed in 1982 for which GMA is the Executive Secretary. This group has food industry organization members from around the world. Their purpose is to evaluate and develop consensus positions on issues coming before any Codex committee.
International Working Group
International Working Group monitors international issues in food policy, working primarily through the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Issues currently under debate include biotechnology, precautionary principle, other legitimate factors, food additive uses, infant nutrition and allergen labeling.
Nutrition and Labeling Working Group
The Nutrition and Labeling Working Group monitors issues such as trans fat labeling, the Food and Drug Modernization Act (FDAMA), the Dietary Guidelines, obesity and the Food Guide Pyramid for children.
Scientific and Regulatory Policy Committee
This committee anticipates and proactively affects scientific and regulatory policy issues that impact the food industry by early identification of upcoming issues, promoting the use of science to resolve policy issues, developing science-based industry questions and interfacing with regulatory agencies to share industry positions.
State Affairs Committee
Consisting of state and government affairs professionals, the SAC develops policy and strategies for GMA to seek at the state level on a variety of issues that impact all GMA members. The Food, Health & Environment and Solid Waste Working Groups manage issues assigned by the SAC and report to the Committee, which meets in state capitols three times a year. The SAC reports to the Government Affairs Council.
Tax Task Force
Created by the GAC to review and discuss industry and GMA tax policies. Members are primary tax contacts at member companies, and meet whenever necessary.
