GMA Focuses on FSMA at 2012 Science Forum

On April 4-6, in Washington, D.C., GMA gathered more than 300 of the industry's top scientists and executives to explore the critical scientific and regulatory developments that are impacting public health, product safety and the industry at large at the 2012 Science Forum.

Focused on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), GMA hosted nationally and internationally respected keynote speakers who provided perspective on what is to come in FMSA implementation, based on four session tracks: food safety regulations; health, wellness and ingredient safety; emerging technology; and science leadership.

Hunger, Craving or Food Addiction?

During this session, a group of nutrition experts discussed their recent scientific findings to gain understanding around this nutritional hot-topic. The panel included Rebecca L. Corwin, Ph.D., associate professor at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University; Marcia Pelchat, Ph.D., associate member at the Monell Center Philadelphia; and Bart De Johnge, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Department of Biobehavioral and Health Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania.

Health, Wellness and Ingredient Safety: What’s the Skinny on Fats? 

While there has been a considerable public health focus in recent decades on decreasing trans fats and saturated fats in foods, there has conversely been surmounting evidence that consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids will reap substantial cardiovascular benefits. During this session, the panelists discussed three vehicles through which to better communicate these benefits to consumers: the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Institute of Medicine (IOM) Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) reports, and nutrition and health related claims on food packages.

Celebrate Your Company's Innovative and Creative Accomplishments with the CPG Award

Given by GMA’s Associate Member Council (AMC), the ninth-annual CPG Award for Innovation and Creativity will honor pioneering ideas that cover a wide range, including the use of new technology, collaboration with trading partners, manufacturing excellence, product development, supply chain improvement, environmental sustainability, product reformulation and productivity improvements.

This year, the two categories for submission consist of manufacturer members with total sales that are under $3 billion and those that are $3 billion and above. Submissions will be judged on creativity, willingness to take risks, achieving measurable results and creating a valuable knowledge base for the entire industry.

Past winners include Kraft Foods, Campbell Soup Company, Time Inc. Retail, Unilever, The Clorox Company, Kettle Brands, The Hershey Company, Diamond Foods, Henkel and last year’s winners, General Mills and Batter Blaster.

The 2012 award winners will be announced at the GMA Executive Conference at the Broadmoor in August.
