GMA MONTHLY UPDATE WEBINAR: UPDATE ON THE VOLUNTARY DATE LABELING INITIATIVE

Date: April 25, 2019

Time: 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. EST

Join Meghan Stasz, vice president of packaging and sustainability, for the first of GMA’S new monthly, members-only webinar series. Meghan will discuss the current state of the voluntary national date labeling initiative, including:

  • The origins of the voluntary date labeling initiative and progress toward broad industry adoption;
  • Best practices for adoption;
  • How the initiative fits with federal and state date labeling proposals; and
  • The value of broad industry implementation.

Background

In February 2017, GMA and FMI introduced the Product Date Labeling Initiative, urging the food industry to adopt the uniform national standard on date labeling language, which provides consumers with better, clearer information about the products they buy. The standard streamlines the more than 10 different date labeling phrases used on packaging down to just two, BEST if Used By and USE By. A recent GMA report found exceptionally high adoption rates of the voluntary standard, since its launch in 2017 and that consumers overwhelmingly found the two dates helpful to them.
