The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) represents the most comprehensive reform of our nation's food safety laws and regulations in more than seventy years.  Tuesday, October 29th's release of a proposed rule on Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals is another step forward toward implementation of this landmark law.

FSMA ensures that prevention is the cornerstone of our nation's food safety strategy and this proposed rule embodies that same principle.  This proposed rule will place new and enhanced requirements on ALL food manufacturers who divert food waste to animal feed, manufacture animal food, or provide ingredients for use in animal feed.  All such facilities would be required to have written plans that identify hazards, specify the steps that will be put in place to minimize or prevent those hazards, identify monitoring procedures and record monitoring results, and specify what actions would be taken to correct problems that arise.

Leading the process for preparing detailed comments, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) will host its third FSMA Update Webinar - How the Animal Feed Proposed Rule Could Impact Your Operations on November 18th, 1:30 - 3:00 PM (EST).

Part I: Monday November 18, 2013, 1:30 - 3:00pm (EST)

Hear from legal counsel expert Maile Hermida, Associate at Hogan Lovells US LLP, who will specifically address what is included in the proposed rule including key effective dates and the implementation timeline for compliance.

Ms. Hermida will also identify any potential high level issues or barriers that will need to be considered during the public comment period.  She will also identify and address what food manufacturers can begin doing today for effective implementation.

Part II: Tuesday November 19, 2013, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm (EST)

On Tuesday, November 19th join Daniel McChesney, M.S., Ph.D., Director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance, Center for Veterinary Medicine for an overview of the major provisions of the proposed rule, the most significant changes that will be felt by the industry and an extended question and answer session!
